Raúl Varela, head of the radio show *La Tribu*, delivered a sharp analysis of Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez’s recent press conference, in which Pérez called for club elections and clashed with the media. Varela described the event as a strategic move rather than a genuine institutional need, stating, “Florentino Pérez is calling for elections not because Real Madrid needs them, but because he needs them.” According to Varela, the president sensed movements within business circles and preempted them with a maneuver designed to block any alternative candidacy. “It seemed like a masterstroke, a checkmate move,” he said.

Varela stressed that there was no real pressure within the club against Pérez before the announcement. “No one at Madrid was asking for elections,” he explained, adding that “almost no one was even calling for his resignation.” In Varela’s view, Pérez’s main goal was to shut down any potential opposition by exploiting the financial difficulty of running for the presidency at the club.
Despite acknowledging the strategic cleverness of the decision, Varela was fiercely critical of Pérez’s tone and behavior during the press conference. “In terms of style, it was a calamitous failure,” he remarked. The journalist added that Pérez “crossed a lot of red lines” and acted in a manner unbefitting the institutional image the Madrid president usually projects. “Today he behaved as if he were sitting at the Zalacaín restaurant talking to two friends,” Varela said, referring to the president’s relaxed yet aggressive demeanor.

When addressing Pérez’s criticism of certain media outlets, Varela responded pointedly: “Hansi Flick is a football coach, not a journalist.” He then delivered a biting remark about the narrative crafted by the Real Madrid president: “Madrid didn’t lose La Liga because of a column in ABC.”

Nevertheless, Varela acknowledged that Pérez once again dominated the media spotlight. “Now no one is talking about Barcelona winning La Liga—everyone is talking about Florentino,” he said, reflecting the president’s ability to control the narrative even during one of the most delicate moments of the season.
