A.J. Ewing made a memorable MLB debut on Tuesday, scoring two runs and driving in two more to lead the New York Mets to a convincing 10-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Citi Field.
Called up from Triple-A Syracuse, Ewing showcased his versatility with an RBI triple, three walks (including one with the bases loaded), and a stolen base. Carson Benge and Juan Soto each contributed two hits, a run scored, and an RBI.
Freddy Peralta (3-3) delivered a solid start, allowing two runs while striking out seven over six innings. Catcher Francisco Alvarez left the game in the sixth inning due to a right knee injury.
Dillon Dingler hit a solo homer for Detroit, which has lost six of its last seven games. Jack Flaherty (0-3) surrendered three runs over 3 2/3 innings.
The Tigers jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Dingler led off with a home run over the left field fence. Wenceel Perez followed with a single and advanced to third on Gage Workman’s double. Spencer Torkelson’s sacrifice fly then brought Perez home.
New York responded in the bottom of the inning. MJ Melendez walked, and Brett Baty singled. After an out, Ewing walked to load the bases, and Alvarez’s fielder’s choice grounder scored Melendez.
The Mets tied the game in the third with consecutive singles from Bo Bichette, Soto, and Mark Vientos. They took their first lead in the fourth when Alvarez doubled and scored on Benge’s single.
In the sixth, the Mets extended their lead to 6-2. Ewing walked, stole second, and advanced on a Luis Torrens walk. Benge reached on an infield single to load the bases, and Bichette’s grounder was mishandled by third baseman Workman, allowing two runs to score. Soto’s groundout added another run.
Ewing’s two-out triple to right in the seventh plated Baty, and Torrens singled to bring home Ewing for an 8-2 advantage.
New York added two more runs in the eighth to seal the victory.
